In the Beginning

In my last blog I done an introduction to my site and to the blog. In this blog I am going to start our journey in understanding God's Word about rest. We will begin our journey this evening in the beginning of creation and move into the ten commandments and connect the dots up till present day. So Lets GO..........

Genesis 2:1-3 NASB95
Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts. [2] By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. [3] Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

Here creation was complete on 6th day and on the 7th day God rested from his work. This doesn't mean rest like us humans do when we finish a hard days work.

The NIV Study Bible says this, "finished . . . rested. God rested on the seventh day, not because he was weary, but because nothing formless or empty remained. His creative work was completed—and it was “very good” (1:31). The Creator rested to commemorate his work." (resource is from Life Bible app: www.lifebible.com)

In the beginning God rested because there was no longer a void to fill. This is a type and shadow of Jesus finished work on the cross and thus becoming our rest. Jesus is our completed work, we have no void to fill because He filled it for us thus entering in to the eternal rest now not when we pass from earth to heaven. When Jesus said on the cross, "IT IS FINISHED" It meant he did as His Father did and completed His work on earth thus setting aside himself to be our Sabbath rest.

Hebrews 4:9-11 NASB95
So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. [10] For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His. [11] Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience.

Here it talks about how Jesus followed His Father's example of resting through simply obeying His Word. The writer here is saying we must be diligent to follow the example of Jesus by doing what He did and rest. When Jesus died on the cross, He finished the same work as His Father did in the beginning. Lets slow down and go back to Genesis and tie all this together........

Genesis 1:1-2 NASB95
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. [2] The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

So here we see in the beginning that the earth was formless and void physically.....after this God began to create and fill the void that was there through the 6 day creation process and as we just learned He rested when that void was completed and filled to the overflow. Now lets move forward in the Word.....

Genesis 3:6 NASB95
When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.

Now here we have a problem, in this verse sin entered the world through the act of disobedience. This resulted in a spiritual darkness that led the earth back into chaos and being without form and void but this time it was a spiritual void and without a spiritual form. Other words it led to eternal separation from God's love.

I am going to stop here and pickup on the next blog post! We will continue this journey, so far I have learned a lot in this lesson and I pray that you as well have learned and was blessed by this mini study.

Blessings to all in Jesus name!
